Press Conference!
I had my first press conference today...I think?...and even though my statement didn't make it in the news, you can still see me in the background. Looking a little pissed, as usual...
Okay, so here's what I said that evidently wasn't good enough for t.v.:
"The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona applauds the public stance taken by Supervisor Mary Rose Willcox, the only member of the Board to our knowledge who has accurately described and publicly criticized the abusive and unconstitutional actions of Sheriff Joe Arpaio & his deputies. It is inexcusable that others have not spoken out on this critical issue of the day and on the actions of our Sheriff. The fact that he is independently elected makes it even more necessary that public officials and opinion makers take a public position. Their deafening silence must be taken as approval of the Sheriff.
The Mayors of Phoenix and Guadalupe have demanded these illegal and counter productive tactics to be brought to a halt, as have the Police Chiefs of Mesa and Phoenix. Sheriff Arpaio’s tactics have not been adopted by most local law enforcement in the state, nor around the nation, and the Anti Defamation League as well as religious and community leaders have called for a Justice Deptartment investigation.
If you are a Supervisor who fears retaliation by Sheriff Arpaio or from the voters, then you fail to understand that our nation’s basic constitutional rights are not based on votes, and the Bill of Rights was written to protect the minority, outsiders, those not like us, from the 'tyranny of the majority'. The Bill of Rights & first 8 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution protects all "persons", & not just citizens or those that look like us, the majority."
